Holter Monitor
The Holter Monitor is a portable device used to continuously record one or two leads of the heart's electrical activity (ECG) over an extended period, typically 24 to 48 hours. It is attached to the patient through small electrodes connected to a portable tape recorder that monitors the heart's rhythm and detects abnormal patterns.
This monitoring technique is especially useful in detecting transient episodes of arrhythmia or ischemia (heart disease), conditions that may not be detected during a standard 12-lead ECG. The Holter Monitor provides a detailed and continuous record of heart activity, which is vital for diagnosing and assessing heart-related issues.
Benefits of the Holter Monitor
- Continuous Monitoring: Unlike the standard 12-lead ECG, the Holter Monitor records the heart's activity continuously for up to 48 hours, offering a more comprehensive picture of heart health.
- Detection of Intermittent Issues: Ideal for detecting arrhythmias or ischemia that may occur sporadically or at specific times, which may not be visible during a short ECG recording.
- Non-invasive: The test is non-invasive, offering patients a convenient way to monitor their heart activity while going about their daily activities.
